Mara is the only woman allowed in the League, a fighters guild for men only. She’s dedicated her life to tracking down the man that killed her father. Good news! She’s finally on his trail!Things started slow. About halfway through they pick up and the story itself gets real good.
What stood out to me about the novel was the world building. As the reader progressed with Mara, they get introduced to two very distinct cultures. Complete opposites, at that. Mara goes from a male-dominated society to a female-dominated one. What surprised me the most was that both of those cultures were at peace with each other. Transitioning between the two takes some crafty deception. Despite that, there’s a general feeling of mutual respect.
I liked the characters and, for the most part, their characterization. Given the constraints of the society created, the women were well-written. They didn’t exactly conform to stereotypes, and that sold me.
There were some things I had difficulty with. Like the frequency of the marriages without knowing a person, but still throwing ‘love’ around. I tried to take them with the cultures of societies present, which made things a little easier. I almost want to say that part of the reason is because things jumped around a lot and so time felt a little distorted. It did serve to further the internal conflict of both the plot and character development. So, there was that. And I can say that I enjoyed the main romantic subplot.
A lot of the story gets told through dialogue. It gets awkward and clunky real easy. Since there was so much, it seemed forced sometimes. Don’t get me wrong–I’m a huge fan of the story construction. There was enough conflict to go around, both internal and external. All the characters got their turn in the spotlight. There wasn’t one specific character that needed saving. There wasn’t one character to do all the saving. Learning curves for fighting and interactions were appropriate, and the development was noticeable.
The reader gets to learn about the characters and world little by little instead of getting told everything all at once. And most of the characters get their fair share. Description lacked in some areas. The narrative broke up in weird ways.
I did like this novel, even if there is editing needed. It doesn’t feel as polished as it should. Even with that, though, the story is one that will gradually suck the reader in and keep them.

My Review of
The Rashade’ (Chronicles of the Coranydas Book 1)

This is a great epic fantasy novel with lots of twist and turns. I loved the magic and sword fighting wielded by the strong Mara as she leaves her mother and sister to take vengeance on the mage who murdered her father when she was just a child. I also loved following some of the mystical creatures throughout the book.
The book itself follows Mara and Kess and some of their friends as they go in search of the magic that will bring Mara sword to life and help her kill the mage. However the journey is long and there are revelations along the way. Will Mara gets her revenge? Will she finds the strength and magic to become an unstoppable force? Read this book to find out.
I also loved the friendship between Kess and Mara as it blossomed into an interesting partnership. I thought the author did a great job in portraying their emotions towards each other and some scenes especially towards the end were so beautiful. But there are so many wonderful and magical characters in this book that are enjoyable to get to know along the way.
I found Mara’s connection with her mum interesting after Mara finds out she won’t be getting her birth right, after an incident deemed her unfit for the position. Instead her sister will someday for full the role. This was cruel and I really felt for her in that moment.
I would highly recommend this book if you love fantasy and strong female characters as well as magic and adventure with scenes that are easy to imagine and emotionally charged at times. This is one for the must read pile.
The Rashade is well written and packed with action...I couldn't put it down! This is a "must read" in the fantasy genre, especially if you like strong female characters. R. Tran is a great story teller and I can't wait to read the rest of the series!
I liked the descriptors, but there were times it got a little wordy. I do think the map should have been in the front to spare a little confusion but other than those two things it was a lovely read )
The plot is intriguing and I love the variety of characters that have been presented. I am looking forward to the next book to continue the story.
Mara Coranyda is a woman on a mission avenge her father’s murder. After being forced to watch her father being tortured and killed, Mara’s whole focus turns to finding the murderer. She trains with the men and becomes a strong warrior. Shortly into her vengeance journey, she realizes it won’t be easy to avenge her father. She needs magical arts and items to destroy the mage who murdered her father. Word travels to the mage and he retaliates by attacking her territory, ridding the world once and for all of the Coranydas. Will Maya succeed or will she die at the same hands as her father?
The Rashade’ reminded me of Game of Thrones or Legends of Windemere, with its in-depth world-building and descriptive narration. The reader is plunged into this world, amid all the action, adventure, back-stabbing and intrigue. The plot progression was slow at the beginning but then sped up as I kept reading. I enjoyed the variety of species and characters. The dialogue was solid, though a little wordy in places. Mara is what kept me reading. She goes through a lot in this book and although I won’t give away spoilers, her growth is immense.
If you like fantasy, you’ll love this book. Strong female heroine is front and center while the secondary characters make it an engrossing read. I look forward to reading book two in the series.

Mara. I liked how strong of a heroine she is. After witnessing her father’s murder, she seeks revenge. I related to her on several levels. I’m a big fan of butt-kicking heroines in fiction, especially fantasy, and she’s a great character!
